Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the Citadel is best known as a senior military college, one of only six in the United States. The school offers undergraduate majors in more than 30 fields of study; in addition, entering freshmen join the Citadel’s Corps of Cadets and participate in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program, which can lead to commissioning as an officer in the US military. All cadets live in dormitories on campus.

Less well-known is the Citadel’s Graduate College, which offers programs leading to master’s degrees in more than 25 different disciplines, as well as certificate programs. The Graduate College also administers a college transfer program for undergraduates transferring college credit from other institutions. Both the graduate courses and the courses for transfer students are conducted in a civilian environment, and the students do not participate in the ROTC program. Classes generally meet once per week in the evening, and some courses permit students to complete all coursework online, providing graduate and transfer students the opportunity to maintain employment while pursuing their degrees. There is no provision for on-campus housing for either graduate or transfer students. In May 2021, more than 230 graduating students received their degrees or certificates at the Citadel Graduate College’s commencement exercises.

US News & World Report ranks the Citadel as the best public college in the South that offers up to a master’s degree. More information about the Citadel and the Citadel Grduate College is available online from the school’s website at Go.Citadel.edu.
